How much experience do I need as a lawyer in Bermuda?

In order to be granted a work permit a lawyer is expected to have at least 5 years PQE. In exceptional circumstances less can be accepted.

Is my income really tax free?

Technically it is completely free of tax. You will, however, have to pay a social security contribution of 4.75% of salary. Please note that some countries, such as the United States, still levy income taxes on their citizens wherever they are in the world so seek advice before accepting your job.

The local currency is the Bermuda Dollar which is pegged to the US Dollar where Bermuda $1=US$1.

As a professional, what hours will I work?

You will almost certainly work shorter hours. A lawyer may well be used to getting home at 1am in London after a long days work.

In Bermuda leaving work at 6pm is late. An accountant might expect normal working hours of 8:30 am to 5:00 pm, however, overtime may be required during the busy periods.

How many holiday days will I get as a lawyer?

You may lose out slightly on this score. A Bermudan lawyer will typically receive 20 days per year compared to an average of 28 in the UK.

Im married, can I bring my spouse?

Your spouse, and children, can be included on your work permit as long as the immigration department deem that your income is sufficient to support all of you. If your spouse wants to work on the island they will have to apply for their own work permit.

It can take anywhere between 2-10 years to make partner.

How long do people stay?

Many lawyers and accountants arrive with a two-year plan, but often they choose to stay longer. It can be hard to go back once youre earning a tax-free salary!
