Bermuda Lifestyle

Diving

Boasting the northernmost coral reef in the Atlantic, Bermuda offers a reef diving experience to rank alongside the Caribbean, 1,000 miles to the south. Its secret is the warming Gulf Stream which provides Bermuda with an unexpected diversity of corals, sponges and marine life.

But visitors dont come here to see the large sea fans and huge finger corals Bermuda is a wreck divers Mecca. With more than 400 wrecks off the Bermudan coast, and many of them in shallow waters, there are a host of unique dives to cater for all standards of diver from the novice through to the master divers.

Heres a selection of the wrecks worth diving:    The Airplane most wrecks are ships but his dive site gives the rare opportunity to dive the wreck of an American B-50 bomber which crashed in October 1963. The wreck lies in 25 feet of water and the impact of the crash scattered the debris over hundreds of square feet but is still there to see today.
The Marie Celeste one of Bermudas most famous wrecks, the Marie Celeste was a 207-ton paddlewheel steamer and a civil war blockade runner. She sank in 1864 and is now submerged in 55 ft of water.
The Hermes this modern wreck (she was sunk in 1985) is one of Bermudas most popular as the former US buoy tender is almost completely intact and offers a fascinating dive opportunity at depths of between 80 and 100.

When you take up your new job as a banker or accountant on the island you will soon be bitten by the diving bug and before long youll be zipping yourself into your wet-suit and taking a PADI course.

Theres plenty of opportunity to learn to dive with a number of PADI diving schools on the islands.

If youre not sure about taking the plunge why not try helmet diving. This gives you the opportunity to experience underwater life by wearing a helmet and climbing down a ladder from a dive boat to the sea floor. You dont need any qualifications you dont even need to be able to swim!
