Weather & Climate

An ex-patriot financial controller recently remarked that Bermuda has the perfect climate for an expat working overseas.

Bermuda is situated 1,000 miles north of the Caribbean and its year-round sunshine. But the Caribbean can be stiflingly hot at times and Bermuda offers a milder climate for most of the year.

With its northerly latitude and its location far out in the Atlantic you might expect a harsh, cold climate. But remarkable the island, warmed by the gulf stream, is frost free and snow free, retaining a comfortable sub-tropical climate.

This idyllic weather does have a sting in its tail. As well as severe winter storms, the summers of May-October are humid and HOT. Many people who come to work in the sun, though, accept this as a minor downside of living in paradise. Just remember to pack a few sweaters along with your Ray-Bans and Bermuda shorts.

Unlike the Caribbean there is no rainy season and rainfall can fluctuate from month to month. Temperatures, however, tend to stay within the year-round norms of 55 90 Fahrenheit. The lowest temperature recorded on Bermuda was 43.6f.

Although it is many miles from the Caribbean belt of islands, this doesnt save Bermuda from the path of Atlantic hurricanes. On average one hurricane per year will pass within 180 nautical miles of Bermuda, with a major storm expected to hit the island every six to seven years.

Hurricane Season

Hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30.

Bermuda owes a key parts of its history to these ferocious winds. The islands were colonised as the result of a hurricane in 1609 which blew the British flagship Sea Venture off course and wrecked it on the rocks off-shore. These early settlers laid the foundation for the next 400 years of Bermudan life.

In Brief

A summary of Bermudan weather:
Temperatures reach 90f in August although the island is regularly fanned by sea breezes.
Rainfall averages 4 inches per month
    Winter temperatures average 60f 70f
