Work Permits
As with most popular off-shore jurisdictions there are many laws in place to protect the employment of local Bermudians.
These cover a multitude of areas but the main ethos being that a suitably qualified, and available, local should be awarded a job ahead of an ex-pat.
In order to give the locals the best opportunities all vacancies and work permit renewals must be advertised and this can be a good way to find out what jobs are around however beware, many jobs which are advertised are simply advertised through necessity and the company may be perfectly happy with its current employee.
Many people also think that the best way to get a job is to be hands-on and fly out on a visitors visa and find a job there and then. This practice is illegal and can lead to deportation.
Professionals And Work Permits
If youre a qualified professional youre unlikely to have any problems with the work permit process. Lawyers are accepted from most Commonwealth countries including the UK, South Africa, Australia, New Zealand and Canada and are usually expected to have at least 5 years PQE or PAE.
Lawyers are not recruited from the US unless they hold Commonwealth law degrees and qualifications.
